Beginners Foil Class

The 8-week Beginning Foil Class is planned for July through September, with an additional class that will begin Septrember (check back here for specific dates).

Classes meet at the YMCA on Lake Otis Blvd, between Tudor and Dowling

Class registration form (click here) for the next class . Print, fill out and take to the YMCA front desk to register. Then please bring the form with you to the first class session.


The next group class will start in July, at the YMCA. The class runs for eight weeks, with two classes a week.

No previous fencing experience is required for this class. The class size is limited to 16 students (based on equipment availability), and sign-up's need to be made through the front desk at the YMCA.

The classes start at 7:00PM each Monday and Wednesday evening and last an hour.

Membership in the Anchorage Fencing Club is not required. The fee for the course is $80 for those who are not members of the YMCA, and $60 for YMCA members. Please deal directly with the YMCA staff if you are interested in their membership programs and the other facilities and activities offered at the YMCA.

All beginning foil classes are eight weeks (16 sessions)


When the beginners course is completed, an opportunity will be provided to become a member of the Anchorage Fencing Club. The cost for club membership is $10/month or $100/year. The club meets every Monday and Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:30 throughout the year.

All equipment (sword, mask) and protective clothing (jacket, glove) for the beginners foil class is provided by the club. Students need to bring personal clothing (sweat pants, sweat shirt or T-shirt, and athletic shoes). A water bottle is suggested.

Members of the AFC fence with all three typical weapons: foil, epee and saber as a matter of personal choice. Once the class is completed, there is ample opportunity to develop proficiency with any or all of the three weapons through individual instruction from our three regular instructors.

The club holds individual bouts at every club meeting and several local and state competitions throughout the year. National competitions are available for those who are interested in qualifying.
